Here in Massachusetts, we can’t size a tankless unit like they do in California. Water entering your home in winter is cold—so your tankless unit has to work that much harder to heat it fast. That affects how many gallons per minute (GPM) the unit can handle at once. Translation: The more bathrooms, body sprayers, and soaking tubs you have, the more firepower you need. This isn’t just about comfort—it can shape the whole install and influence the overall price

🔥 Gas Line Considerations

Here’s where things get technical: the average tank-style water heater runs on 40,000 to 80,000 BTUs. Most gas tankless systems? You’re looking at 150,000 to 200,000 BTUs.

That’s a big jump—and your existing gas piping may not be up for it. National Fuel Gas Code requires us to confirm that the entire gas system can handle the added load. If it can’t, we’ll need to upgrade part of your gas line to make it safe and code-compliant. We’re not going to cut corners, and neither should you.

⚡ Electrical Requirements

If your old tank was a natural draft model, chances are it didn’t need any electricity. Tankless systems, though? Even the gas ones need a 120V outlet—typically a dedicated line back to your panel. This powers the control board, sensors, and safety systems.

If your electrical panel’s maxed out, that might mean some upgrades. It’s a detail a lot of folks overlook—but we won’t.

High-efficiency condensing tankless units can’t just vent through the same pipe as your old water heater. These systems produce moisture-rich exhaust that requires either special venting to the outdoors or a stainless steel liner in the chimney.
